Final Week + Exhibition

This final week was spent finalising all of the case study documents and adding extra files. With the addition of a few extra bits and pieces, the case files were finally finished. We decided to add thumbprints of both Deirdre and Nefertiti, maps created by April and letters which I created.

All the end products are finally done and honestly I feel satisfied with the outcomes.
The Unit X exhibition took part on Thursday the 14th at federation house and Manchester and was definitely an interesting experience to see the work of various students from all over the different art & design campuses.

In the basement there was an abstract show of lights and a little ‘assault course’ of artwork. One group had even produced a screen which monitored your pulse (after crawling through a small crawlspace).

There was a nice display of all of our postcards from first year graphic design and illustration. I was surprised to see so many high quality and well-polished postcards. They truly looked professional and unique and pretty much every postcard I picked up was inspiring. I honestly found more inspiration in the exhibition then I did in my ‘Inspiration’ folder on my MacBook.

I also took a look at some of the film student’s escapades and as expected, a lot of things were very theatrical and connotative but nevertheless interesting.

Unit X has been a pretty interesting experience. It’s been hard to work as a group where each person boasts a different style and comfort circle but seeing everybody cross over and work together has honestly been great. I’ve had the opportunity to see how other people work and to gather some ideas and inspiration to use myself. I feel like everybody in the group properly committed to the tasks and made a conscious effort to leave their own footprint (or thumbprint in Lawrence’s case).

I appreciate having the opportunity to come out of my comfort zone and move forward with my own approach to work as well as develop the skills and techniques which I’m already familiar with. I also appreciate the opportunity to be landed in a situation which seems chaotic and hopeless (connecting Deirdre Barlow and Queen Nefertiti) and be able to produce something I’m happy with.

The first of our final products

This was an especially busy week for all of us as deadlines were falling near.

My postcard design
For Tuesday the 5th we had to produce our own individual postcards for the end of year exhibition and by the end of the week, we were expected to have produced most of our final pieces.

Anthony had made all of the website functional through the interactive PDF and all files linked (after the creation of a couple of maps by April and two letters by me). I was pretty satisfied with the outcomes as it kept its simplicity and design but it’s clinical, orderly themes started to properly emerge. The website turned out near enough exactly how I imagined it.

The rest of the work would be to continue creating the case study files and to make sure it all came together.

April purchased a couple of case-study type file holders from a stationary shop and Lawrence began slicing pages down to size. We had to make sure everything aligned properly, make sure it looked pretty authentic and of course, make sure that it was of course designed nicely.

Agusia’s illustrated evidence cards looked perfectly in place with everything else in the folder and April had also finished creating leaflets for both Deirdre and Nefertiti and
Lawrence was working on creating working QR codes.

During this week I feel we all came out of our comfort zones to create something nicely presentable and authentic, and in the end it paid off. I was really satisfied with the first of the final products and how everything was coming together.

The final week now can just be spent polishing off all of the case file documents and adding a few more files to the document such as maps and letters.
